with musical accompaniment by Polina & Merlin Shepherd
The first half of this evening at the Jewish Museum Vienna will be devoted to early silent black & white films (1910–26) from Ukraine and Russia. The musical accompaniment will be provided by Polina and Merlin Shepherd as part of the Sound & Lights Cinematic Duo project. In the second half of the program the duo will perform traditional and modern Yiddish songs.
Merlin (clarinet) and Polina (piano & vocal) Shepherd are stars of the traditional Eastern European klezmer music scene. Although both of their families came originally from Ukraine, their influences come from both east and west. Merlin Shepherd’s ancestors emigrated in the late nineteenth century from Ukraine and Romania. Polina Shepherd’s grandparents fled from Kiev to Siberia to escape the Shoah. The different threads come together in a creative musical and spiritual mix. With their years of experience of traditional Yiddish music, Polina and Merlin Shepherd offer a completely new and modern approach to “Yiddishkeit.”
