Book Presentation: Alexandra Föderl-Schmid & Konrad Rufus Müller „Unfassbare Wunder“
Many Holocaust survivors are not able to talk about their experiences until the end of their lives. They experienced pogroms and, in many cases, concentration camps as well. Flight and expulsion have marked them, and many traumas will never pass. But the stories they pass on are more important than ever. Those still living are contemporary witnesses; their life stories are unique. This book features Holocaust survivors who speak about their experiences and their view of the present and the future. Particularly in times of flaring anti-Semitism, their voice is even more crucial. Whether they live in Germany and Austria or in Israel shapes their perspective, and it is the juxtaposition of these that makes this book special: Those who made it to Israel often never set foot in Germany or Austria again. Those who stayed or returned must ask themselves why they remained in the country of the perpetrators. The photographs by Konrad Rufus Müller form the second pillar of the book: Portrait shots that impressively document the traces of time. Images that keep people and their memories from being forgotten.
The journalist Alexandra Föderl-Schmid was editor-in-chief and co-publisher of the daily paper “Der Standard” and is now the correspondent of the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” in Israel
