Film presentation: "All Quiet on the Western Front"
The film tells the story of the German high school student Paul Bäumer, who, like all of his classmates, volunteers for the army when war breaks out, after his teacher has extolled the virtues of a hero’s death and of dying for the fatherland. After being bullied by reserve corporal Himmelstoss, the young soldiers are dispatched to the front, where Bäumer’s platoon joins experienced soldiers. Together they experience the horrors of trench warfare.
The American feature film is based on the anti-war novel of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque. It won Oscars for Best Film and Best Director.
