Film presentation: “Der Fotograf vor der Kamera”—a film about Erich Lessing
The pictures by photographer Erich Lessing are a chronicle of our times. His photo of Leopold Figl with the State Treaty on the balcony of the Belvedere in May 1955 has become etched in the Austrian memory. Lessing, member of the legendary Magnum agency, is one of the most important post-war documentary photographers. In “Der Fotograf vor der Kamera,” Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel accompany the 90-year-old Lessing, who is still active today. As the photographer himself would approve, they dwell on details, small gestures and brief moments that give the film its special appeal: the photographer tying his necktie and bemoaning the demise of the traditional Windsor knot, or working on his digital archive to preserve his analog photos from disappearing. A good photo should inspire reflection, says Lessing. In keeping with this spirit, “Der Fotograf vor der Kamera” invites viewers to take a fresh look at this exceptional artist.
