Film presentation: „Die Akte Odessa“
In 1963 the American journalist Peter Miller (Jon Voight) comes across a diary by chance. It belonged to the Jewish Holocaust survivor Salomon Tauber (Towje Kleiner), who recorded his experiences in the ghetto in Riga and had now, almost twenty years later, committed suicide. Miller studies the contents and discovers detailed descriptions of the brutal ghetto commandant Eduard Roschmann (Maximilian Schell), known as the Butcher of Riga. When Miller reads of an incident in which Roschmann allegedly shot a German officer, he becomes curious. He finds out that the former Butcher is still alive and sets off to find him. He is soon involved in a complicated cat-and-mouse game in which not only powerful former Nazis but also the CIA and KGB are implicated.
The British-German thriller directed by Ronald Neame is based on the novel The Odessa File by Frederick Forsyth. The film is being shown in connection with the temporary exhibition “Wiesenthal in Wien” currently on show at Museum Judenplatz. Wiesenthal was a consultant during the film production. He is played in the film by Shmuel Rodensky.
