**“Yidl mitn Fidl” (Yiddle With His Fiddle)**
“Yidl mitn Fidl” (Yiddle With His Fiddle) is one of four masterpieces shot by director Joseph Green while he was still in Poland. Apart from “Mamele” (1938, also by Green), this was the only Yiddish film in which Molly Picon, the undisputed star of Yiddish theater, had a speaking and singing role. A romantic comedy filmed in 1936 in Kazimierz and Warsaw, it brings to life the world of Eastern European Jewry that was to be lost forever. The music is by Abraham Ellstein with lyrics by Itzik Manger. “Yidl mitn Fidl” is without a doubt the high point of Polish Yiddish cinema and was the first internationally successful Yiddish movie.
