Circle of Friends

The Jewish Museum Vienna was founded – or re-established – in 1990. Almost 100 years earlier, in 1895, a private association in Vienna had set up the first Jewish museum in the world, which was forced to close in 1938 by the Nazis.

The new Circle of Friends established in February 2006 continues the tradition of the association that sponsored the first Jewish museum. The collection built up before 1938 through private initiative was one of the most important examples of its time of Jewish museum culture. In spite of the destruction by the Nazis, the core of this collection still provides the basis for the unique inventory of the Jewish Museum Vienna.
