The Schlaff collection
The collection includes around 5,000 objects, mostly books, brochures, graphic prints and commercial art and postcards, as well as around 250 utility items and porcelain figurines. Most are from Austria and Germany, but there are also items from other European countries such as France, Great Britain and Poland. Books and brochures are catalogued in the library of the Jewish Museum Vienna, while graphic prints, commercial art and three-dimensional objects are kept in the Museum depository. The collection was donated to the Jewish Museum Vienna in 1993 by Martin Schlaff and has been accessible since then for research purposes. In 1995 an exhibition was organised in Vienna City Hall entitled “The Power of Images”. This venue was chosen deliberately: because the anti-Semitic objects in the collection offer a view of the Jews and their religion from the outside, they are not on permanent exhibition within the Museum.
