Elmar Samsinger and Adelheid Mayer relate the moving story of the Mayer family and their textile business, the highs and lows of Austrian wholesale clothing business in Vienna and the Levant, and 140 years of European and Middle Eastern history.
The members family were established and successful assimilated Jews living in the Danube monarchy. A. Mayer & Co. clothing company began around 1830 in the Pressburg [Bratislava] ghetto, enjoying its heyday in the Middle East before World War I. The Vienna-based company was sold in 1938, and the family’s enduring business activities finally came to an end with the closing of the last remaining branch in Istanbul in 1971.
Elmar Samsinger is a judge, exhibition organizer, publisher, and author. He specializes in the history of culture and tourism in Austria-Hungary and the Middle East. Adelheid Mayer, a qualified seamstress, studied fashion design and worked for a long time in the fashion industry. The book is the result of intensive research into the family’s records.
