Book presentation: Evelyn Adunka “Meine jüdischen Autobiographien. Eine Leseverführung und subjektive Auswahl”

Evelyn Adunka presents the autobiographies of 364 Jewish authors. In the contexts of their lives, they describe the great Jewish hopes and disappointments in the age of emancipation and the two biggest historical turning points in Jewish history in the twentieth century – the Shoah and the founding of the State of Israel. Many of these authors lived in Europe and had to flee, but a considerable number of American and British life stories are also introduced. Adunka does not only describe the autobiographies as intrinsic to the work but has also examined and incorporated the accompanying materials (reviews, obituaries, encyclopedia entries, biographies, editions of letters, etc.). The book thus shows the diversity of Jewish identity and Jewish destinies and numerous examples of successful biographies of the most diverse places and milieus.

Dr. Evelyn Adunka, historian and publicist in Vienna, is a member of the editorial board of the Theodor Kramer Society’s magazine Zwischenwelt and a board member of the Austrian Society for Exile Research.
