Film screening: “Exile & Excellence. The Class of ’38”
In this film project, based on an idea by the Austrian Academy of Sciences President Anton Zeilinger, sixteen scientists who were persecuted by the National Socialists and expelled from Austria have their say. Among them are the literary scholar Ruth Klüger, the chemist Martin Karplus, the physicist Walter Kohn and the neuroscientist Eric Kandel. All of them had a sustainable impact on their research fields; several of them received the Nobel Prize. The film makes the life experiences and fates of these people accessible and provides direct insights through personal interviews into the experience – and aftereffects – of flight and expulsion.
Frederick Baker, the British-Austrian filmmaker and scholar, created and directed the documentary. He conducted the interviews in 2015/16 together with the historians Johannes Feichtinger and Heidemarie Uhl, who were responsible for the scholarly project management.
