Lecture: The lost pictures of Bettina Ehrlich-Bauer
The painter, graphic artist and children’s book writer Bettina Ehrlich-Bauer (1903–1985) was the niece of Adele Bloch-Bauer and the cousin of Maria Altmann. When she left Austria in 1938 to flee from the Nazis, she saw to it that the works of her husband, the sculptor and painter Georg Ehrlich, were taken along. Her own pictorial oeuvre, originating between 1925 and the early 1930s, was left behind in Vienna. Since then it has been missing. Only a mixed lot of old black-and-white photographs from her estate still show how exciting these paintings in New Objectivity style looked. On the back of the photos the artist sometimes noted the title, date, colors and/or dimensions from her memory. The lecture sets off on the search for a forgotten artist who would have deserved a substantive place in Austrian art history of the interwar period.
Exhibition curator Andrea Winklbauer will be presenting the lecture.
