Yom HaShoah memorial day
Thursday, April 16, 2015 – 5 p.m.
Since 1951, Yom HaShoah has been a public holiday in Israel to commemorate the victims of the Shoah. The Holocaust memorial site Yad Vashem in Jerusalem organizes a commemorative ceremony every year on this day attended by members of the government. The event also commemorates non Jewish heroes who risked their lives to rescue Jews. Sirens are sounded throughout the country in the morning and public life comes to a standstill for two minutes.
On April 16, 2015, the Jewish Museum Vienna will be holding a commemorative event at Dorotheergasse 11 starting at 5 p.m. with a minute of silence. Afterwards we will show Andrzej Nowakowski’s photos of Auschwitz as it looks today in recollection of the seventieth anniversary of its liberation.
