The Jewish Museum of Vienna is a place of social interaction, a place for meeting, communication and discussion. It gives insight into Judaism, his social life, parties, holidays, traditions, but also in the youth culture.
Both locations – Jewish Museum Dorotheergasse and Judenplatz – offer a unique overview of Viennese Jewish history and the Jewish religion.
At the Jewish Museum Judenplatz we invite you to take a virtual walk through the Jewish Vienna in the Middle Ages to experience the Jewish life in medieval times.
The Judenplatz symbolizes Jewish past, present and future in one place. Judenplatz was the center of Jewish Vienna in the Middle Ages – nowadays you can find there an active synagogue, the Lessing Memorial and the Holocaust memorial by Rachel Whiteread, which was initiated by Simon Wiesenthal and opened 10 years ago.
The Jewish Museum Vienna Dorotheergasse presents itself as an open house with innovative insights into its collections and a unique annual program. The museum´s collections document the former size and intensity of Viennese Jewish life before the disruption of 1938. They also give insights into the revival of Jewish presence in Vienna in recent decades. In its current special exhibitions the Jewish Museum Vienna combines the city´s Jewish history with global issues such as social history and migration.
