Friedrich Torberg’s novel was written under extremely dramatic circumstances: from May 1938 to June 1939 in Prague, Zurich, and Paris, when Torberg was in flight after having had to give up his apartment in Vienna. The wonderful novel is a literary record of the time, describing life and emotions in a doomed and self-destructing city.
