G-d took six days to create the world and rested on the seventh, giving it to mankind as a day of rest. Jews celebrate Shabbat from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday. Shabbat starts this Friday in Vienna at 3.59 p.m. You are invited to experience this moment in the Jewish Museum Vienna. We will not light the Shabbat candles or say the blessing over wine in the Kiddush cup but will present the Shabbat Room installation by the Israeli artist Maya Zack.
The tour of the exhibition will take in the Visible Display, where Shabbat candlesticks, Kiddush cups, and besamim [spice] containers from the various Jewish Museum Vienna collections can be admired. We will explain the Friday ritual, why religious Jews don’t turn the lights off, and how leave is taken from the bride with whom Shabbat is compared: Git Schabbes!
