It’s not the case that the Viennese don’t have a sense of humor. But the share of Jewish Viennese or Jewish women and men who came to Vienna had an enormous impact on the overall humorous happenings in this city. Fed by linguistic wit, intelligence and education, this humor has something fascinating to it and is not merely just “funny.” Gerhard Bronner and Georg Kreisler would have both turned one hundred this year. Quite a number of other Jewish lyricists and composers will be remembered as well.
