Baden near Vienna – to this day, the spa town attracts visitors with its idyllic Biedermeier flair, just like in the days of the emperors. Numerous illustrious spa and summer guests came to stay. Industrial magnates like the coal-dealing Gutmanns, the legendary banker Samuel Ritter von Hahn or manufacturers like the candy-making Hellers built Historicist and Art Nouveau villas: an exciting mixture that has shaped Baden for nearly two centuries. Many of these families had Jewish roots and shaped the city's summer life until 1938.

Marie-Theres Arnbom tells a moving story about villa residents and builders between personal fates and major moments in history.
