What's your name? By any other name... Exploring Arabic Calligraphy: An Introductory Workshop with Artist Lenore Mizrachi-Cohen
Museum Dorotheergasse
© Tobias von Marillac
Jewish Syrian-American artist Lenore Cohen explores the disappearance of Arabic-Jewish first names and their communities in Arabic countries. Her calligraphies of traditional Arabic names transform into flowers in dark and lighter shades, symbolizing the fading of these names - a process in which people themselves participate by abandoning them. The work addresses identity, the appreciation of cultural intersections, and gently resists the erasure of heritage.
As part of our collaboration with the Jewish Institute for Adult Education (JIFE), we are offering a free calligraphy workshop with the artist, where participants can design their own names. No materials or language skills are required.
To begin the creative process, Lenore Cohen will present her commissioned work "By any other Name …" featured in the exhibition "Black Jews, White Jews? On skin color and prejudice" (October 22, 2025 – April 26, 2026 at the Jewish Museum Vienna). Experience a fascinating introduction to Arabic calligraphy and its history – including a step-by-step guide.
The workshop lasts 2,5 hours and will be held in English.
