October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

After losing his wife Bettina von Rothschild to breast cancer in 1892 at the age of 34, Albert von Rothschild founded a hospital dedicated to women’s health, which was open to all women regardless of confession or nationality. Construction took place from 1894 to 1897, and the hospital was named the “Bettina pavilion” in commemoration of his wife. The building formed part of the former Kaiserin-Elisabethspital (today the Ingrid Leodolter Haus nursing home) on Huglgasse in Vienna’s fifteenth district and stands under monument protection. This bust of Bettina von Rothschild was on display at the hospital and is currently held at the Ingrid Leodolter Haus nursing home. You will be able to see the bust and learn more about the thrilling history of the Bettina pavilion in our upcoming exhibition, The Viennese Rothschilds. A Thriller.
