The Jewish Museum Vienna mourns the loss of external contributor Murray G. Hall, who worked for us as a translator and editor for many years. We learned to appreciate him not only because of his very high language competence but also as an incredibly generous person. He always supported us with a naturalness that is rarely found. Be it with helpful knowledge that he had acquired through his decades of research work or with his flexible time management: More than once, between his gardening work, he worked on our texts that urgently needed to go to print.

Born in 1947 in Winnipeg, Canada, he was best known for his book published in 1978 about the Jewish writer Hugo Bettauer, who was murdered in 1925. His life’s work is the two-volume edition of the publishing industry in Austria (1985). Other publications focus on the history of the Zsolnay Verlag and on the recording of the estates of Austrian writers in international archives and libraries.

We will miss Murray G. Hall as a colleague, visitor, and lender. With his modesty, generosity, and never-ending interest in Austrian literature and culture, he will be remembered as a role model.
